CHAPTER SEVEN

When Good Old Boys Go Bad

When I exit my office, watching Sara go her way, Harper comes to me with his eyebrows up. “That was a lot of laughter for a therapy session.”

“Laughter’s the best medicine,” I quip and feel happy.

“So, I’ve heard,” he says and gives me an odd look.

In the groove, I say to him, “Did you hear about the restaurant on the moon?”

He shakes his head, “You don’t say.”

Stifling my laugh, I say, “Great food, but it had no atmosphere.”

Getting the joke, he chuckles, shaking his head, then he gives me a sly grin. “How do you make a Kleenex dance?”

I shake my head and smile. I’m, glad he’s not a stuffed shirt with no sense of humor.

“You put a little boogie in in it.”

Bursting out laughing, I head toward the den to get a soda from the fridge. “What do you call cheese that hasn’t got your name on it in the work fridge?”

He shakes his head, walking with me.

“Nacho cheese.”

This time he really laughs and I’m grateful I can still work a tough crowd. “Did you hear about the kidnapping at school?” He shakes his head, so I say, “It’s all good, he woke up.”

“Haha, Harper says. “I never buy anything that has Velcro.”

I give a shrug to say I don’t know the punchline as we walk into the den. “It’s a total rip-off,” Harper finishes the joke.

Laughing hard again, I shake my head, happy to be here.

“So how was therapy with Sara?” he asks.

“Really good. I let her use her toys to do the talking and then we just told jokes for half an hour. That seemed to bring her out of that fearful head-space and is more normal now. She’s going to be just fine.”

“Doctor patient confidentiality?” asks Harper, handing me a beer.

I take the beer from him. What the heck, it’s the holidays. Three days to New Years. I may as well drink beer at eleven in the morning. My grand pappy would be rolling over in his grave at this, or slapping me on the shoulder, it’s hard to tell.

Sitting at his bar, I ask, “Why are math books so depressing?”

“Aren’t you a bit past that?” he asks and leans on the bar on the other side.

“Because they are so full of problems,” I say.

Then he laughs, “You got me!”

Smirking, I take a swig of beer. I think I might’ve preferred the soda. “Where are the noise makers?” I ask, wondering why it’s so quiet.

“It’s hair trimming and painting nail time up in Tilly’s room.”

“Ah,” I say with a nod.

“So, what do you make of Sara?” he asks.

Does he mean personally or professionally?

“Um, good,” I say with a nod, playing it low key.

“Take off the doctor hat for a moment and just talk to me as one Daddy to another.”

“Right,” I say with a nod. “Smoking hot, when can I call her mine?”

“I thought I could pick up some chemistry between you two.”

“That reminds me,” I say. “How does Nasa organize a New Year’s gig?”

“How?” he says, indulging me.
